Industrial IoT SOM pairs edge processing with wireless connectivity

Laird’s Summit SOM 8M Plus system-on-module (SOM) is powered by an NXP i.MX 8M processor built for machine learning, vision, and industrial IoT. The module also employs the NXP 88W8997 dual-band 2×2 Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.3 combo chip. Laird’s most feature-rich and secure SOM to date, the Summit SOM 8M Plus serves as a core platform for many advanced wireless IoT applications.

Along with the 1.6-GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A53 processor, an integrated neural processing unit operating at 2.3 TOPS provides hardware acceleration for machine learning. An 800-MHz Arm Cortex-M7 MCU offers real-time control, while a DSP core and GPU afford rich multimedia (graphics, video, vision, and audio). The Summit SOM 8M Plus also features a broad selection of interfaces, including USB, Gigabit Ethernet, CAN, I2C, SPI, and UART, as well as audio and video.

The onboard Cortex-A53 and Cortex-M7 cores allow simultaneous Linux and RTOS execution on dedicated, firewalled subsystems. Leveraging the Summit Suite security architecture, the module provides secure enclave with secure boot, credential, and data storage.

Summit SOM 8M Plus modules can be purchased through Laird’s distributor network. Offering pin-compatible connectivity, refreshed Summit SOM 8M Plus modules will be available as NXP updates its Wi-Fi + Bluetooth combo silicon to the latest standards. Further, the i.MX 8M Plus processor is backed by NXP’s Product Longevity Program, which ensures long-term availability of 15-plus years.
