UWB sensor touts power-saving interactivity

Novelda’s ultra-wideband (UWB) proximity sensor can wake up a device when a person approaches and turn it off once the person leaves the detection zone. When used in smart home appliances, tablets, or vending machines, the context-aware sensor can extend LCD screen life from 2 to 10 years. It also increases interactivity and gives devices an automated, power-saving mechanism.

User-configurable for both distance and sensitivity, the UWB sensor offers reliable detection within the zone of interest. Absolute range is scalable from 0.5 meters to 1.5 meters, making the sensor well-suited for close range indoor applications. A wide field of view of up to 180° enables accurate detection independent of the angle of approach. The sensor also ensures fast response with a latency time of less than 0.25 seconds for device activation or deactivation.

According to Novelda, UWB sensing outperforms technologies like passive infrared or time-of-flight in terms of accuracy, robustness, cost, power consumption, and security. The UWB proximity sensor can be integrated behind most types of material, including plastic, glass, and fabric, without affecting performance.
