Reference design touts cord-free AR


The Wireless AR Smart Viewer reference design from Qualcomm enables OEMs and ODMs to build untethered augmented reality (AR) glasses. Powered by the company’s Snapdragon XR2 5G AI platform, the reference design eliminates the cord between the AR glasses and a compatible smartphone, Windows PC, or host processing puck.

The Snapdragon XR2 packs high performance into a slim, smaller AR glass form factor. Compared to the AR Smart Viewer powered by the Snapdragon XR1, the XR2-based reference design hardware, developed by Goertek, has a 40% thinner profile and more balanced weight distribution. SeeYA Technology supplies the dual micro-OLED binocular display, which provides a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels per eye and frame rates up to 90 Hz, as well as a no-motion-blur feature. Dual monochrome cameras and one RGB camera on the smart viewer enable head tracking with 6 degrees of freedom and hand tracking with gesture recognition.

With 3-ms latency between the smartphone and the AR glasses, the XR2 design offers virtually lag-free AR experiences. It accomplishes this with an integrated FastConnect 6900 chip with Wi-Fi 6/6E and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity combined with FastConnect XR software suite.
