Sierra Wireless readies next-gen 5G modules

Sierra Wireless is now sampling its RF-optimized EM92 series of 5G NR sub-6 GHz mobile broadband embedded modules. This latest edition to the Sierra Wireless lineup will enable the most demanding, business-critical industrial and networking use cases. The company also announced that DISH Wireless has adopted the EM92 series 5G modules to connect to its new Smart 5G network through Band N70.

The EM92 series delivers 3GPP Release 16 standard capabilities and provides secure connectivity at high speeds with low latency worldwide. These next-generation devices are well-suited for such bandwidth-intensive applications as high-definition live video; industrial IoT deployments like machine vision and drones; and networks that require reliable broadband communications equivalent to previous wired technologies.

Building on the company’s EM91 series, the EM92 modules offer faster speed, positioning technology for a wide range of indoor and outdoor use case requirements, and enhanced 5G NR Sub-6 carrier aggregation. The EM9291 delivers a peak downlink speed of 4.9 Gbps and peak uplink speed of 660 Mbps. It supports 30 worldwide 5G bands, as well as LTE bands, and can be used for global deployment with approvals from multiple NAM, EMEA, and APAC carriers. Outfitted with USB 3.1 and PCIe Gen 3 single-lane host interfaces, the EM9291 offers an easy upgrade path from LTE to 5G NR.

EM92 modules are based on an M.2 form factor, with dimensions of 30×52×2.38 mm. Commercial availability is expected at the end of Q3 2022.
