Dedicated software for ST’s VL53L5CX time-of-flight (ToF) multizone sensor allows touchless gesture-based control while maintaining privacy. The combination of the VL53L5CX sensor and STSW-IMG035 software makes gesture detection simpler and more affordable to implement in a wide range of consumer and industrial applications.
The VL53L5CX ToF sensor provides 64 zones with high-accuracy ranging up to 400 cm and a wide square-edged 63° diagonal field of view. Together, the sensor and software calculate in real-time the X/Y/Z coordinates of the hand, enabling hand tracking and recognition of gestures like tapping, swiping, and level control.
Unlike conventional gesture recognition systems, which typically employ camera-based machine vision, ST’s offering not only affords greater privacy, but also lower power consumption. And it works in the dark without external illumination. The lightweight gesture algorithm can be used with STM32 microcontrollers and requires minimal system resources.
In production now, the VL53L5CX sensor comes in a 6.4×3.0×1.5-mm, 16-pin optical LGA package. Prices start at $3.90 in lots of 1000 units. The turnkey STSW-IMG035 gesture package includes a GUI, example code, and libraries.
