AMOLED PMIC boosts battery runtime


The STMP30 PMIC from ST integrates three DC/DC converters to provide all the power rails needed for AMOLED displays in smartphones and mobile devices. According to ST, the device combines low quiescent current and enhanced functions to extend battery runtime.

Operating with an input voltage of 2.9 V to 4.8 V, the STMP30’s 550-mA VOUT1 boost converter supplies an adjustable output voltage. Unlike other devices that fix VOUT1 at 4.6 V, the STMP30’s output can be set between 4.6 V and 5.0 V in 100-mV increments. This optimizes the display brightness for lowest power consumption and best visibility under varying lighting conditions. VOUT2 is provided by a 550-mA single-phase buck-boost inverting converter, programmable from -0.8 V to -6.6 V, while VOUT3 is furnished by a 150-mA boost converter with programmable output from 5.5 V to 7.9 V.

Output voltages are programmed using S-Wire protocol through external pins. The PMIC also receives S-Wire messages to operate the AMOLED in always-on display mode, showing information on-screen continuously at very low power. The STMP30 furnishes a true shutdown mode that helps maximize power savings, as well as safety features such as thermal protection, input undervoltage lockout, and soft-start with inrush current limiting. High-voltage outputs include fast-discharge circuitry and short-circuit protection.
