Diatom is an energy-harvesting chip from Nowi that features an inductorless design and integrated power management. The device, which comes in a 4×4-mm, 28-lead QFN package, helps reduce both implementation cost and area in a variety of low-power applications.
Diatom has a wide power input range from microwatts to milliwatts and employs maximum power point tracking (MPPT) to achieve high harvesting efficiency. It extracts the power output of a variety of energy harvesters to charge energy storage elements such as rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors. A cold start function enables batteryless designs, decreasing battery maintenance while offering a more sustainable option. The chip also offers regulated output, overvoltage protection, and USB charging.
By combining energy harvesting and power management into a single device, Diatom simplifies the design process and lowers the threshold for any company to develop energy autonomous products. Applications for the part range from smart home to 4.0 industry/retail IoT devices, as well as space-constrained wearables, remote controls, and smart tags.
A datasheet for the Diatom (NH16D3045) energy-harvesting PMIC was not available at the time of this announcement.
